Communication and Marketing – A Quick Start

Communication and Marketing – How important is communication in marketing?

Communication and Marketing.  Why is this important and why should you be reading this?

I wanted to create this short blog post to get you THINKING in a different way…We are humans and we interact with each other through communication.  If you want to master your marketing, you need to master the art of communication.  So let’s dive in and take a high-level overview.

Communication is a crucial element of our life as humans and therefore marketing. Isn’t it then obvious that effective communication is necessary to convey the marketing message to the target audience and to persuade them to take action, such as making a purchase?

There are so many ways to communicate with consumers, including advertising, public relations, social media, and personal selling. This is before we even talk about eye contact, body language, verbal etc.  Each of these channels has its own unique strengths and can be used to reach consumers and communicate with them in different ways.

In order to be effective, marketing communication must be targeted, relevant and consistent across all channels.  This applies to message, tone, voice and all that applies to it.

How do You communicate better?

So now I want to share with you a few brief tips to help you communicate better.  Read this and then contemplate how you can start this week by integrating these into your marketing message:

  1. Be clear and concise: Use simple, straightforward language to get your point across. Avoid using jargon or technical terms that may be unfamiliar to your audience.  Speak how they speak using the words they do.  Think congruency.
  2. Listen actively: Pay attention to what others are saying and show that you are engaged in the conversation. This includes making eye contact, nodding, and asking clarifying questions.  Go even further and listen to how they are all communicating so you can understand them better.
  3. Use nonverbal communication: Your body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice can all convey meaning and influence how your message is received.
  4. Practice empathy: This also speaks to point 2 above. Try to understand the perspective of the other person and show that you care about their thoughts and feelings.
  5. Stay open to feedback: Be willing to listen to others and consider their input, even if you disagree with them.  Not easy, LOL, but give it a try.

So now I want you to just take baby steps and maybe even Google a few of these and go even deeper.  Purchase a book or audiobook to master the art of communication.  I’ll share the next blog post on this topic, marketing and communication in the coming days, to build on this.

To your success
