What is the Social Media Platform of Choice for Your Target Customers?

Do you know where your potential and existing customers hang out? Are you sure you know the social media channels they use?  Do they use one or many?  This is important information in order for your message to get to the right audience on the correct platform.  We help you out with this right now in this post!

Not only do you need to be consistent, organized and focused with your social media campaigns, but you really do need to know where your customers are!

First things first though?  You should grab a piece of paper or Word document and scribble down the following first.  This will help you identify your audience for each social media campaign:

  1. Am I targeting men or women?
  2. What is the Age group I am targeting?
  3. What is their income level?
  4. What is their geographic location?
  5. What is their education level?

You have to know what your target audience looks like before you can start deciding on the platform you wish to use.  Without this info you are working blindly.

Also take a look at our posts about working with goals and finding your avatar as this is critical.

So let’s take a look at the main Social Media Platforms…Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and Pinterest.  Before you read on try and take a quick guess which ones attract mainly women, men, businesses, age groups etc.

This is just a brief outline.

Facebook

Facebook is the 800lb gorilla and dominates.  Here are a couple of key stats based on the latest Pew research:

  • Some 76% of all internet users use Facebook
  • the fastest growing demographic is 64+
  • Women use FB more than men by about 10%
  • Still younger demographic dominate 18-29 & 30 – 49
  • users that dominate have some college education
  • earnings less than 50,000 dominate

Twitter

We know that Twitter is dominated by business folks and celebrities.  Unlike LinkedIn, Twitter seems to be the place where people are always trying to sell something, so make sure your campaign stands out from the rest.  Twitter has seen almost no growth in users in the past 2 years.  Some 76% of all internet users use Facebook.

  • Some 18% of all internet users use Twitter
  • Women and Men use Twitter equally
  • Still younger demographic dominate, 18-29 over next best 30 – 49 by 12% with older than that very thin in terms of usage
  • No dominant education level
  • No dominant earnings level

LinkedIn

We all know that LinkedIn is predominantly a business networking site and dominates that niche very well which makes it pretty unique.  Personally, I am a big fan of LinkedIn to generate business leads.

  • Some 22% of all internet users use LinkedIn
  • No huge gap but Men use this platform more than women by about 5%
  • Age demographic that dominates 30 – 49 & 50 – 64
  • users that dominate have college+ education
  • earnings more than 75,000 dominate

Pinterest

Pinterest is a sensation and has been over the past couple of years. Women dominate this channel and 33% of all women online use Pinterest.  Pinterest is 3rd behind FB and LinkedIn in terms of percentage of internet users actually using the channel, with 21% of online adults using the service.

  • Some 21% of all internet users use Pinterest
  • Woman dominate this channel over men by 25%!!!! 33% of all women online use Pinterest!
  • Age demographic that dominates, 18 – 29 & 30 – 49
  • users that dominate have college+ education
  • earnings more than 75,000 dominate and leans towards a higher income demographic

Instagram

Instagram is the up and coming star that is very popular with the younger generation and by that I even mean middle schoolers!!!This is mainly a photo and video sharing site, so if that fits what you offer and the demographics fit then get on it!

  • Woman dominate this channel over men by 5%.
  • Age demographic that dominates 18 – 29 by 19%.
  • users that dominate have High School or some college education. We know these are school age folks and those still at college
  • earnings less than 50,000 dominate and leans towards a higher income demographic

So this is just a brief overview, but knowing the above info and tying that into your target audience will help you sharpen your focus and you will already be ahead of your competition.

Good luck and let us know how we can help!
